UNISAME URGES SMEDA TO SEEK COLLABORATION & JOINT VENTURE WITH CHINESE
President UNISAME Zulfikar Thaver said that the government should not miss the opportunity and submit plan to the Chinese government for seeking collaboration and joint ventures with Chinese SMEs in light engineering, electronics, electrical goods, stationery, automobile parts and other items which are imported from China.
The medium sector in China is willing to patronize the units in Pakistan for mutual benefit and the possibility needs to be exploited.
It is pertinent to note that the SMEs in China contribute to 65% of GDP which reflects the very strong position of the SMEs in Chinese economy especially the medium and higher medium sector which is looking out for opportunities to expand globally due to domestic saturation.
He also added that the SMEs expect SMEDA to implement the SME policy in letter and spirit and said non implementation of the SME policy would mean the futility of SMEDA.
He pointed out that many years have passed by but the institutions envisaged in the SME policy have not been set up. Especially the SME export house, the SME credit guarantee, SME insurance, SME fund for joint ventures, SME technical institute and the SME chamber of commerce.
Even the SME Bank is left without support and not enabled to cater to the SMEs. It is very important for the SME Bank to be strengthened to enable it to stand on its own feet and permission is given to SME Bank to open more branches and offer services to the sector.
The much talked about Exim Bank should be put on fast track and established without loss of time.
UNISAME urged SMEDA to play proactive role and think ahead and take steps for the betterment of the sector. SMEDA was formed to promote and develope the sector and not just be an appendage to the ministry of industries. It is supposed to think independently as an authority and influence the government to take measures and steps for broadening the scope.
UNISAME reiterated the demands for priority for sector, finance for the sector at affordable mark up, exemptions for alternate energy devices and systems, reduction in duties on raw material, marketing support both global and domestic, tariff protection for goods manufactured in Pakistan, conducive environment and incentives for investment and one window operation in the real sense.
UNISAME urged SMEDA to take up the issues of the sector vigorously and impress the government to facilitate the sector by making doing business easy.
The union expressed the need to promote ‘Grow in Pakistan’ and invite overseas Pakistanis to set up green houses and agro-based units for value addition to farm produce.
