UNISAME urges action against corruption

KARACHI, The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) has invited the immediate kind attention of prime minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif to the increase in corruption in the country in direct proportion to the hyper inflation and devaluation of the rupee.

President UNISAME Zulfikar Thaver said the corruption has increased due to increase in the cost of living and all corrupt officials in various government departments have increased the rates of bribes and facilitation money boldly stating that it is difficult to survive in the old rates of corruption. According to them the increase in rates of bribes and
facilitation money is justified.

Even the extortionist have increased their rates on the plea that everything has become expensive. The SMEs are feeling the impact badly and are finding it extremely difficult to pay bribes and facilitation money in government departments to
expedite work.

Bribery and facilitation money is very necessary without which it is not possible to move any file in any government office and from the peon to the top officer it is considered an essential gratification. Thaver urged the PM to remember his pre election promises to deal with corruption strictly and also urged the opposition parties to act in opposition to the menace of increasing corruption and compel the government to take strong anti corruption measures.

The UNISAME chief also invited the attention of the PM to the fake and counterfeit goods of foodstuffs, medicines and consumer items openly sold in the markets. Copies of famous brands are also sold as first and second copies. All these activities are chapters of corruption and need to targeted as corruption.

The union also complained of sub standard goods and services and urged the PM to set up a complaint bureau against manufacturers and service providers for supplying inferior goods or services and not as agreed in the contract. The union also urged the PM to set up an inspection team for inspecting construction of roads, bridges and irrigation infrastructure as most of the work being done is below the bench mark.

The union urged the PM to revamp the Pakistan Standard Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) for more efficient quality control. The union expressed full confidence and high regards for the PM and his sincerity but questioned about the promises of his party to eradicate corruption from the customs, railways, PIA, government and semi government institutions and urged him to assert himself and have 0 tolerance for corruption.
