THE FINANCIAL DAILY 20/06/23
The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) has questioned the commercial banks as to their reluctance to finance imports of SMEs despite the fact that State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has advised them to finance imports from export proceeds and home remittances as well.
President UNISAME Zulfikar Thaver said a proposal has been submitted to SMEDA for consideration and examination of Dollar Voucher Scheme (DVS) for home remittances to be utilised for imports and the voucher would be saleable in open market at the open market rate.
UNISAME is going to submit to SBP for examination and approval and launching of the scheme after studying its pros and cons thoroughly.
UNISAME Council members are perturbed that why the commercial banks are not inclined to finance the SMEs for priority imports inspite of SBP directives and the availability of dollars for imports.
It is pertinent to note that cargo is lying at ports and incurring damages and the SMEs are suffering losses due to
demurrage and also loss of production.
The UNISAME Council has urged the SBP to look into the matter and facilitate the SME importers.
