The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) invited the attention of the prime minister (PM) that the small to medium sized enterprises (SME) sector is the majority sector and comprises of 96% of the total entities in Pakistan. It is the back bone of the economy and the back forte of the large sector. It is the engine of growth and employs 40% of the work force and contributes to 35% of the GDP and 35% to exports. It surely deserves representation in the PM’s Business Advisory Council (BAC) and urged the PM to include its representative.
President UNISAME Zulfikar Thaver invited the attention of the PM to this omission and urged him to include an SME representative in the BAC to enable the BAC to know the impediments to the growth of the economy, the remedies to remove the road blocks and suggest ways and means to increase GDP, employment and promote value addition.
It is pertinent to note that the agro based industries play an important role in the economy and are a support to the farm sector. The agrobased industries are mostly owned by the SMEs and therefore it is very important that an SME representative is included in the BAC to promote, support and advocate the cause of the sector with emphasis.
The BAC will not be complete without an SME representative as the representatives of the large sector will pursue their own interest vigorously and the issues of the SMEs will not be placed on the table for redress. Besides the issues the fact cannot be denied that the sector if facilitated and supported can bring about remarkable growth in the economy in terms of self employment and poverty alleviation.
Thaver urged the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) to recommend inclusion of SME representative in the BAC promptly.
