PM URGED TO APPOINT FULL TIME CEO OF SMEDA & RECONSTITUTE BOARD

Jan 17, 2015 |
The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) in an urgent message to prime minister (PM) Mian Nawaz Sharif has apprised him of the technical issues such as access to finance and policy constraints and also has particularly invited the attention of the PM to the delay in the appointment of a full time chief executive officer ( CEO) for the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority ( SMEDA) which is responsible for the promotion and development of the sector but devoid of a full time CEO since more than a year.
UNISAME believes strong institutions are pre-requisite for sustained effort for reaching desired objectives and urged the PM to appoint a CEO to steer the authority and reconstitute the board of directors of SMEDA to include representatives from each province and a representative of the SME sector as per the SMEDA ordinance for smooth and efficient functioning of the authority responsible for SME promotion and development.

President UNISAME Zulfikar Thaver said the majority sector deserves the best attention of the government and through the SME sector the government can achieve the required targets of growth and investments.

He said the sector needs promotion and development from grass root level for real uplift. The government institutions need to co-ordinate for short term and long term policy for the sector and it is very important for all to recognize that the primary sector is the source of all raw material and is well looked after and educated. The SMEs need to be facilitated, supported and motivated by SMEDA to grow scientifically.

Thaver appreciated the steps taken by the PM to expedite the setting up of Exim Bank and urged the PM to expedite the setting up of the SME Institute, SME Export House, SME Chamber of Commerce, Bank for SMEs and SME Ombudsman. These institutions will put the SME promotion and development on fast track.

The UNISAME chief explained that the SMEs are traders, manufacturers, consultants and farmers and each of these sector needs the services of SMEDA for their uplift and up gradation of their products and services.  They also need the facilities of banking, insurance, leasing, information technology support and logistics for their efficient functioning and urged the government to improve these for the SMEs on modern lines.
