Commerce Forum relaunched in Karachi
KARACHI : The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) on Friday resolved to work hand in hand with the large sector considering the fact that the SME sector and the large sector are interdependent on each other for economic growth and need to integrate their efforts in the larger interest of the nation.
“Both the sectors play important roles and are the warp and weft of the economic fabric of Pakistan,” said Zulfikar Thaver President UNISAME while speaking at a ceremony in a local club, held to relaunch the Commerce Forum, an entity of businessmen and women comprising small, medium and large entrepreneurs.
Thaver emphasized that the SME sector is the back forte of the large sector and the SME sector also benefits by the large sector as many SMEs are vendors of the large units. He said: “There are no differences between the SMEs and the big businessmen as both believe in promoting commerce and industry and are of the same opinion that economic strength of Pakistan is crucial. There are no two ways about it. Pakistan has to become strong and develope its economy.” “There is a misconception that the SME sector is not in favour of the facilities provided to the large sector. In fact the SME sector believes that if there is industrialization the small sector will grow as a result.
The SME sector needs the patronage of the large sector and looks forward to the big industrialist to set up industries of innovative items, import substitution items and industries for import depletion of assembling plants especially in the automobiles sector.”
Thaver expressed great joy at the re-opening of the Commerce Forum which was established in 1965 and remained dormant for many years. The forum is expected to work jointly with UNISAME and the union considers itself fortunate to have the support and guidance of the forum members.
The forum has as its members engineers, doctors, lawyers, chartered accountants, IT experts, consultants and entrepreneurs ranging from small, medium and large enterprises. He said: “Commerce Forum and UNISAME will work out a joint strategy to make the forum an effective consultative body to recommend reforms in taxation, promotion of exports, promotion of industries, establishment of industrial estates, one window operations, protection of industrial areas and advise the government to strengthen the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors of the economy.”
