Nov 19, 2015 |

The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) invited the attention of federal finance minister (FM) Ishaq Dar that SME promotion and development is constitutional responsibility of the government and it is not charity. The government is under constitutional obligation to implement the SME policy approved by the cabinet.

President UNISAME Zulfikar Thaver speaking on the occasion of the Global Entrepreneurship Week at a local club said the government is duty bound to promote and develope the under privileged sector and every effort must be made to promote and develope the micro to medium sized sector as a constitutional obligation. The government needs to facilitate new entrants and promote the concept of self employment which can resolve the unemployment issue to a great extent. The primary sector which is a source of raw material needs the urgent attention and support of the government.

Thaver thanked the corporate sector for fulfilling their obligations of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and urged the need to enhance activities scientifically with the help of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA).

He highlighted the importance of access to finance, technological support for up gradation and modernization, marketing support and conducive environment.

UNISAME committee stressed the need for ease of doing business, promotion of alternate energy systems, improving infrastructure and efficiency of logistics.

There is urgent need for state of the art industrial estates and leasing of commercial property under pay as you earn schemes.

Many participants complained of lack of information and new comers are ill informed about procedures and requirements for doing business.

There is also urgent need for the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) to establish the SME export promotion bureau for promotion of SME wares globally.

SMEDA is unable to function at its best due to lack of personnel and funds and it seems it is left to itself and neglected. SMEDA needs to be strengthened to enable it to perform and reach the SMEs engaged in farming, trading, manufacturing and services and uplift them by taking them to the next level.
