MINCOM REITERATES NO MANDATORY MEMBERSHIP FOR RICE EXPORTERS

Apr 24, 2014 |

The Ministry of Commerce (MINCOM) has again reiterated its earlier position that the mandatory membership of Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) has been removed.

Altaf Hussain Maitlo Assistant Chief (Exports) in a letter dated 21st April 2014 addressed to Ch. Masood Iqbal chairman REAP has stated that presently as per policy in vogue mandatory membership of REAP for rice export is not required.

President Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) Zulfikar Thaver has invited the attention of the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) to take note of the matter and direct the Quality Review Committee (QRC) not to insist on REAP membership number from rice exporters.

Although the mandatory condition of REAP membership was removed on 23rd April 2012 the QRC kept insisting on REAP membership number and this compelled the SME rice exporters to seek clarification from MINCOM and yet again QRC kept insisting which again compelled the SME exporters to seek help of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority for another clarification to remove all ambiguities on the subject.

Thaver urged Dr Usman Narejo the director TDAP to take action and direct the QRC controller and deputy controllers at all stations to refrain from insisting on REAP membership and carry out the pre-shipment inspection (PSI) of all rice exporters failing which the matter will be reported to MINCOM.
