KARACHI: The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME)
has urged the secretary, Trade Development Authority of Pakistan
(TDAP) to apply for geographical indications (GI) tag to Intellectual Property
Organization (IPO) promptly and claim the GI rights for the goods
specifically known, reputed and acknowledged for their geographical origin, says a
Press release.
President UNISAME Zulfikar Thaver said TDAP need not delay and finally
claim GIs for goods, and register all products which deserve GI by virtue of
their specific origin.
Thaver urged the TDAP to diligently pursue the Basmati matter with the
European Union.
Some famous products of Pakistan are the Hunza apricots, Peshawari Chappal, Multani Sohan Halwa (desserts), Sindhi Ajrak (shawls), Sargodha Kinnows, Kasuri Methi
(Fenugreek), Sindh Mangoes, Dhir Knives, Swat Wild Mushrooms, Chaman Grapes, Pashmina
Shawls and many more said Haji Muhammad Saeed chairman of SME Farmers
Association of Pakistan (SMEFA). He also urged TDAP to expedite matters in the best interest of all stakeholders.
Haji Muzammil Rauf Chappal chairman Cereals Association of Pakistan
(CAP) also urged the secretary TDAP which has been nominated as the registrant
for the GI tags to claim GI tag with IPO. He offered full assistance of CAP in
the matter along with his committee for prompt registration.
