The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) has sent SOS to Abdul Razzak Dawood adviser to prime minister (PM) Imran Khan to immediately allow exports of face masks for Covid 19 protection to global destinations against their demand as Pakistan has huge stocks due to surplus production and domestic demand is being complied with fully.
President UNISAME Zulfikar Thaver said many SME manufacturers of face masks have approached UNISAME to contact the ministry of commerce (MINCOM) to allow exports as there are huge stocks of unsold masks due to less than expected demand.
Thaver said the SME manufacturers in anticipation of extraordinary demand for protection masks due to the Covid 19 pandemic set up units to manufacture face masks and installed machinery to manufacture masks of international standard and started manufacturing round the clock which resulted in over production. Now they have surplus stocks and markets are saturated and every day the prices are falling due to no demand. The domestic market is well covered and no orders are pending for deliveries.
Now is the best opportunity to export and earn valuable foreign exchange as there are regular enquiries from the Gulf, Middle East and European countries and samples have been approved also. The prospective overseas buyers have liked our quality which is as per international standards and the price is also competitive.
This opportunity needs to be availed promptly without loss of time as with the passage of time, the overseas buyers may set up their own units or come up with something else. Secondly the scare and panic is disappearing and demand is reducing so it is very important that exports are allowed immediately.
In this connection a meeting was held at UNISAME House under SOPs and it was decided by the representatives of Mask Manufacturers Group led by Javed Amersy, Muzzammil Shujjat and Taha Ali to send SOS to adviser to PM Razzak Dawood, Sauleh Farooqui federal commerce secretary, CEO of Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) and Hashim Raza CEO of SMEDA to impress upon the government to allow exports of masks immediately and save the SME manufacturers from huge financial losses and to promote their entrepreneurial spirit of innovation.
