The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) has urged the Ministry of Industries and Production (MoI&P) not to leave the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) without a chief executive officer (CEO) for any more days and immediately appoint the most suitable candidate.
President UNISAME Zulfikar Thaver said it is unfortunate that SMEDA has remained without a CEO for long. The SME promotion and development work is suffering and the sector can ill afford such a setback.
Thaver has urged the MoI&P to expedite the matter by interviewing and selecting the best candidate from the response it has received to its advertisement. It would be best if the selection is made purely on merit and the CEO is selected on the basis of his or her experience in SME promotion and development rather than an officer from the bureaucracy not having expertise.
SME promotion and development is not everybody’s cup of tea it calls for a scientific approach and needs an expert who knows the pulse of this majority sector.
Thaver identified the requirements of the sector and stressed the need for filling the technological gap, training at all levels, affordable finance, marketing support, incentives, uninterrupted energy, friendly taxation policies and above all encouragement , support, help and motivation for modernization and
up-gradation. UNISAME experts hope the new CEO will be a person with a vision and energy to strengthen the micro to medium sized sector on fast track.
