Karachi, August 23, 2013 (PPI-OT): The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises urged Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif to implement the SME policy in letter and spirit and reminded him that the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) was conceived by him and therefore deserves his best attention.

President UNISAME Zulfikar Thaver speaking as guest at a private business television channel highlighted the urgent requirements of the sector and informed the viewers about the need to promote collateral management and related warehouse receipt financing system.

He emphasized on the need for banks to comprehend the definition of collateral and think beyond immovable properties and include bills receivables, inventory, goods in transit and change their narrow minded approach.

Thaver urged the PM to place SMEDA directly under him in the cabinet division and ensure the uplift of the majority sector just like many other countries where the SME promotion bodies are directly under the PM or the president. Even in U.S.A. the Small Business Corporation is directly under the president of the USA.

Thaver as member board of directors of SMEDA promised to promote venture capital, SME export house, SME institute for transfer of technology, SME chamber of commerce and other recommended institutions in the SME policy.

He spoke about the importance of a specific SME bank, insurance and logistics company to include collateral management with global links.

He recommended 0% duty on alternate energy devices, formation of national cadet corps to combat terrorism, collective and joint security services for industrial estates and increasing efficiency of law enforcing agencies by providing them modern control and command systems and vehicles fully equipped to combat terrorism.
